Vitamin D can help with weight loss
If you're trying to drop some pounds and convert to a healthier lifestyle, you might want to look into adding more vitamin D to your diet, especially if you live in a place with more cloudy days than average. A recent Italian study has found that people who took Vitamin D supplements were able to lose more weight over the same period of time than those who didn't.
Scientists at the University of Milan recruited 400 overweight and obese adults to take part in the study. They were all put on the same low-calorie diet, but one group took 100,000 units per day of vitamin D, one group took 25,000 units and a third group took no supplements.
The amount of vitamin D supplementation appeared to be directly correlated with the amount of weight lost on average by each group. Those in the 100,000-unit group lost an average of 5.4 kilograms, while those in the 25,000-unit group lost 3.8 kilograms. The group that took no supplements lost only 1.2 kilograms on average.
"The present data indicate that in obese and overweight people with vitamin D deficiency, vitamin D supplementation aids weight loss and enhances the beneficial effects of a reduced-calorie diet," the researchers wrote. "All people affected by obesity should have their levels of vitamin D tested to see if they are deficient, and if so, begin taking supplements."
