Use Seagreens seaweed as a healthy salt replacement this year

Many people are working toward achieving a healthier diet and lifestyle in 2015, and one smart and simple way to do that is by consuming more seaweed in your daily meals. Seaweed is rich in vitamins, trace elements and micronutrients, and healthcare professionals, researchers and chefs all agree that it makes the perfect salt replacement for people watching their sodium intake.

"[Seaweed is] very versatile; it's used in bread, baked goods, ready meals etc," Dr. Craig Rose told Food Navigator. "Whilst it's not exactly like sodium chloride it adds a lot of flavour to food and also it's been shown to extend shelf life, which is what salt is often used for. It's multifunctional even just in salt replacement."

In fact, seaweed contains 3.5 percent sodium, according to Food Navigator, compared to 46 percent sodium in table salt. A low-sodium diet is particularly important for the health and longevity of Americans, because too much sodium consumption can lead to hypertension and heart disease, which is one of the leading causes of death throughout Europe and the United States. The American Heart Association (AHA) estimates that about 90 percent of Americans' sodium intake comes from the consumption of sodium chloride.

However, this doesn't have to be the case, especially since seaweed makes for such an effective and nutritious alternative to table salt, and it's easy to include in savory meals.

The AHA also estimated that if the U.S. population reduced its average sodium intake to 1,500 mg per day, deaths resulting from cardiovascular disease would decrease by anywhere from 500,000 to nearly 1.2 million over the next decade. Additionally, achieving this goal could result in the nation saving about $26.2 billion in healthcare costs. It's well worth the effort to try something new by choosing more nutritious and heart-healthy options in 2015.
