Seaweed’s antioxidants can help tissue damage from organ transplants

Seaweed's antioxidants and anti-inflammatory properties are getting further use. Researchers from Trinity College Dublin are investigating a possible new element contained in seaweed that could reduce tissue damage in patients who receive organ transplants.

The group is led by Dr. Sharee Basdeo, a research scientist in the school of biochemistry and immunology, and funded by Science Foundation Ireland. Dr. Basdeo told the Irish Times that they're looking specifically at substances found in Irish seaweed, and so far have found one compound that has promise to become a natural, non-toxic treatment for organ transplant-related tissue damage.

The tissue damage from organ transplants can occur in what's known as "reperfusion injury," when blood flow returns to tissues and triggers inflammation and oxidative stress. Dr. Basdeo explained that these compounds in seaweed have strong anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties that can prevent this damage.

While Dr. Basdeo has already been testing these effects on human cells, she said the research is ready for commercial application. Currently, Dr. Basdeo is working to gain "proof of concept" funding help from Enterprise Ireland to get this seaweed treatment on the market.

"Thinking outside the box is what scientists have to do today," she told the Irish Times.

According to research by Newcastle University, Seagreens seaweed products are particularly effective in helping oxidative stress. They have a high antioxidant capacity, higher than that of fruits or vegetables, that remains intact throughout digestion and releases a high concentration of antioxidants in the gut lumen.

To benefit from seaweed's antioxidants, try Seagreens Food Granules. Every Seagreens product contains all the minerals, micronutrients, trace elements and vitamins that can be found in all-natural, organic seaweed. Seagreens organic wild wrack seaweeds are produced to the company's award-winning proprietary standard (patents pending) among Scotland's remote Western Islands in pristine Grade A waters. All Seagreens products are organic, kosher and certified free from allergens and contaminants.
