New Study Shows The Benefits Of Salt Reduction

Governments around the world could see significant cardiovascular heath benefits by implementing policies that would reduce salt consumption by 10 percent over the next ten years, according to a recent study.

Published in The BMJ, the study modeled the cost of reducing salt consumption in 183 countries. Researchers used data on global sodium intake, blood pressure levels and cardiovascular disease, and modeled different scenarios depending on possible reductions. They concluded that cutting sodium consumption by 10 percent over 10 years would save about 6 million disability-adjusted life years.

The researchers also found that such efforts would only cost $204 per life year, which is highly cost-effective. By comparison, statin drugs cost about $37,000 per life year, according to Dariush Mozaffarian, M.D., Dr.P.H., dean of the Friedman School of Nutrition Science and Policy at Tufts University in Boston and senior study author.

"We know that excess dietary salt causes hundreds of thousands of cardiovascular deaths each year," Mozaffarian said in a press release. "The trillion-dollar question has been how to start to bring salt down, and how much such an effort would cost."
