Nestle announces sodium reduction in products

In support of the FDA's voluntary sodium guidelines for packaged foods, Nestle has announced new sodium reduction efforts in its products. Overall, the food manufacturer hopes to help consumers limit their daily sodium intake to 2,000 milligrams a day, according to recommendations from the World Health Organization.

"Our food and beverages provide nutrition to people in 189 countries, and with this scale we have a powerful platform to contribute to better global health outcomes, including for heart health," said Paul Grimwood, chairman and CEO of Nestle USA, in a news release.

Nestle also says it's committed to encouraging its colleagues in the industry to do the same. According to its press release, the company already reduced sodium in its food portfolio by 22.7 percent between 2005 and 2012. Its goal is to further these efforts and lower sodium content another 10 percent by the end of 2016.

Some of the consequences of high sodium intake include hypertension, heart disease and stroke. A 2015 international seaweed research review with Canadian and Danish authors suggests replacing the salt in food products with seaweed as way to reduce the prevalence of these conditions.

Supported by award-winning research from the UK's Centre for Food Innovation at Sheffield Hallam University, Seagreens® seaweed contains only 3 percent sodium compared to the 40 percent in normal salts. It has now been in use by food manufacturers in Europe for several years, making it a successful and healthy replacement in food. In addition, it adds valuable nutrition and helps regulate digestion and weight.

To reduce the sodium in your own diet, try Seagreens Mineral Salt. Every Seagreens product contains all the minerals, micronutrients, trace elements and vitamins that can be found in all-natural, organic seaweed.
