How to maintain your diet with your first food intolerance

As we get older, of us outgrow our allergies or food intolerances and some of us unfortunately develop them for the first time. When you've lived your entire life without any sort of food intolerance and suddenly have one, how can you cope? It's a huge adjustment for your diet and lifestyle, but luckily we have some simple tips to help balance your meals to make sure you're getting the nutrients you need:

1. Make a plan
The first step in maintaining a healthy, balanced diet is to understand what your food allergy is preventing you from having, and what kind of nutrients that limitation will omit from your meals. From there, you can start planning your diet around your allergy to make sure it doesn't disrupt your nutritional intake.

2. Consider taking supplements
If you can't fill all your nutritional gaps with food, you may need to start taking daily supplements to make sure you're getting everything you need.

3. Look for other sources of your missing nutrient
Even if you've developed lactose intolerance or a gluten allergy, there are plenty of sources of the nutrients you need. For instance, there are plenty of calcium-fortified foods and beverages that can help you replace milk and other dairy products in your diet. Some nutrient-rich foods, like seaweed, can help you make sure you're consuming everything you need to stay healthy.
