Glamour magazine explores incredible health benefits of seaweed

Though once contained to a handful of coastal communities, seaweed recipes have become a hot topic across the United States in the last few years. Chefs have been eager to embrace this versatile ingredient while general consumers have been wowed by its high nutrient content and all of the health benefits that entailed. One indicator of just how mainstream this formally fringe sea vegetable has become is a recent piece from Glamour magazine that touts the plant for its nutritional offerings.

"Seaweed is [...] filled with vitamins and minerals: vitamins A, B-6, C, fiber, and iodine—which is very critical in maintaining good thyroid health," the magazine states. Citing a 2011 study that was featured in TIME earlier this summer, the source also notes the potential ability of bioactive peptides found in seaweed to help moderate blood pressure and reduce heart disease risk.

According to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, about a third of older Americans suffer from high blood pressure and approximately 715,000 Americans experience a heart attack each year. Given these statistics, it's clear that people must make a conscious effort to make heart-healthy decisions on a daily basis, starting with their diet. Seaweed can contribute to this goal in many ways. In addition to its beneficial bioactive peptides, this plant can also be used as a salt replacement, thereby reducing overall sodium consumption. Research has shown that excessive salt is a key risk factor for high blood pressure and heart disease, so consuming less can help protect your long-term health.

A 2009 study from the Sheffield Centre for Food Innovation also indicated that Seagreens® seaweed, when used in bread, could replace salt and lead to an increased feeling of fullness that ultimately facilitated weight loss efforts. Since obesity is a risk factor for cardiac disease, diabetes and other grace medical concerns, this seaweed benefit can also help protect heart health.
