Get enough vitamin C this summer for skin health

As we head into the summer, outdoor gatherings will become more common and your skin is likely to be exposed to the sun more often. It's a refreshing time after staying cooped up inside all winter, but it also puts your skin at greater risk of sun damage. To avoid some of the negative effects associated with excessive sun exposure, it's important to make sure you're getting enough vitamin C in your diet.

A recent study published in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition examined 4,025 women between the ages of 40 and 74. The researchers found that those who consumed more vitamin C were less likely to develop wrinkled skin and had lower levels of skin dryness on average. This may be due to vitamin C's ability to encourage the production of collagen in the body.

Vitamin C also has antioxidant properties that help defend the skin from the effects of free radicals, which are partly responsible for the damage that comes from getting too much sun. Vitamin C has been shown to minimize brown spots and other sun damage and actually increases the effectiveness of sunscreen in defending against UV rays.
