Could seaweed help fight food allergies?

Around 15 million Americans suffer from food allergies, estimated Food Allergy Research & Education. In addition to being costly and challenging to manage, food allergies can be life-threatening.

That's why researchers are looking for ways to stop food allergies in their tracks. As a new study published in the Journal of Agricultural and Food Chemistry found, seaweed just might be the answer they've been searching for.

Going off previous research that discovered certain varieties of seaweed contained anti-asthmatic and anti-allergy properties, the researchers decided to test a commercial variety of red algae to see if it had the same effect. They fed the red algae to a group to mice with a sensitivity to tropomyosin (essentially a shellfish allergy) and compared them to another group of mice with the same allergy that wasn't given the algae.

The researchers found that the algae-fed mice had reduced allergy symptoms, while the other group did not, suggesting that this strain of seaweed could play an important role in managing food allergies. However, the researchers say further investigation is needed to understand the relationship between allergies and red algae.
