California community holds fourth annual seaweed harvest
With concerns about global warming mounting around the world, sustainability is increasingly becoming a top priority among international governments and private citizens alike. As U.S. officials enact policies to promote green energy on a national scale, many individuals across the country are looking for ways to reduce their carbon footprint.
One method of doing so is prioritizing produce and other food items that are locally or sustainably grown. In that vein, members from the small Californian community of Petaluma have gathered this week for the fourth annual Seaweed Harvest, according to the regional news outlet Petaluma360.com.
"What motivated me to come out were the health benefits of seaweed and also learning about our ocean and its wonders," said Petaluma resident Kelli Loux, who attended the event for the first time this year.
As a part of the harvest, interested parties had the chance to attend a seaweed harvesting workshop hosted by the non-profit Daily Acts, which focused on tackling wide-sweeping global issues through everyday actions. The workshop included instruction on seaweed identification, and also covered the medical and culinary uses of this abundant sea vegetable.
Guided by Heidi Hermann, the only individual in attendance who has been issued a commercial seaweed harvesting license, the group of just over 20 headed to the shore and spent hours sifting through and gathering the sea vegetable for use at home.
Whilst it is great to learn about seaweeds and their incredible diversity, anyone interested in experimenting with seaweed recipes should be aware that, without the proper knowledge, simply collecting this plant from a nearby shoreline may be unsafe as you will not be aware of any contamination present and sustainability issues relating to the local environment in which these wild plants are growing. Seagreens® seaweed is sustainably wild-harvested in Grade A Pristine Waters, so you can rest assured that the Food Capsules, The Mineral Salt and the Culinary Ingredient you enjoy are brimming with nutrients and nothing else.
